E = mc² may appear to belong in a physics classroom. Its consequences reach much closer to everyday experience.
The sunlight warming your face begins with nuclear reactions inside the Sun. Nuclear power relies on another type of nuclear reaction. PET medical imaging provides a remarkable connection involving matter, antimatter, and radiation.
Even storing energy in a battery changes its total mass by an extraordinarily small amount.
The important scientific distinction is equally interesting. E = mc² establishes a relationship between mass and rest energy. It does not provide a convenient method for releasing the entire rest energy of an ordinary object.

Which example changed how you understand E = mc²?
Does understanding the physics behind sunlight, electricity, or medicine change how you experience those familiar things?
What other scientific equation would you enjoy exploring through everyday examples?
Sunlight may be my favorite example. We experience it so routinely that its extraordinary physical history can disappear into the familiarity of an ordinary morning.
Understanding the nuclear processes behind that warmth does not diminish the experience for me. It gives me another reason to appreciate it.
Which familiar natural experience became more interesting after you learned the science behind it?
