Most of us have experienced a conversation that began with an interesting disagreement and suddenly became personal.

The original subject may not have changed. Something else changed. Perhaps a value, identity, group connection, or expected consequence entered the discussion.

Understanding another person’s reasoning does not require accepting their conclusion. Sometimes asking one thoughtful question can reveal what actually matters beneath the disagreement.

What helps you remain curious when someone strongly disagrees with you?

Sometimes disagreement reveals information that agreement would never uncover.

Someone else may notice a consequence I overlooked or place greater importance on something I considered minor.

Neither person must abandon a position for that exchange to have value.
