We often imagine scientific progress as a sequence of discoveries that gradually produced the correct answer.

The history of quantum physics was much less orderly.

Some of its most important physicists disagreed about models, mathematics, probability, and the meaning of quantum theory. Those disagreements forced deeper questions and new ways of examining evidence.

Heisenberg and Schrödinger are an interesting example.

Their approaches looked remarkably different, yet physicists eventually recognized important mathematical connections between them.

Different approaches do not always require one person to have misunderstood the problem.

Einstein’s disagreements with aspects of quantum theory also remind me that criticism can contribute to scientific progress.

A difficult question can force everyone involved to examine assumptions more carefully.
