The Global Landscape of Theology 

Theology is the study of divine principles, human belief, and the purpose of existence, a field explored across various global cultures. While often associated with Western traditions, theology is a worldwide pursuit found in unique forms within many cultures. Each tradition contributes to humanity’s broader understanding of the divine and spiritual truths.

• Western Theology – Western theology traditionally focuses on Christian thought, with an emphasis on the nature of God, salvation, and moral principles. Major works include the Bible, writings of church fathers, and philosophical treatises by scholars like Aquinas and Augustine. Western theology has also engaged with Enlightenment and modern philosophical thought, expanding dialogues between faith and reason.
• Hindu Theology and Indian Philosophies – Hindu theology, rooted in texts like the Vedas and Upanishads, examines cosmic order, the self, and divinity through principles like dharma and karma. Taoism, for instance, explores the Tao (the way of nature) as a guiding force, focusing on balance and simplicity. Confucian teachings emphasize moral values and social harmony, shaping theological perspectives that prioritize humanity’s role in the cosmic order.
• African Theological Perspectives – African theologies often involve spiritual practices centered around ancestral reverence, nature, and community life. Many African cultures believe in a Supreme Being, with spiritual intermediaries connected to family or clan. Rituals, music, and storytelling are central, preserving beliefs and honoring the divine forces of nature.
