- Walking Under a Ladder:
This superstition dates back to medieval times, where a ladder leaning against a wall formed a triangle, symbolizing the Holy Trinity; passing through it was considered blasphemous. - Breaking a Mirror Brings Seven Years Bad Luck:
In ancient Rome, mirrors were thought to hold pieces of one’s soul, and breaking one meant damaging the soul and waiting seven years for luck to renew. - Black Cats Crossing Your Path:
Originating in the Middle Ages, black cats were believed to be witches’ familiars or witches themselves in disguise, bringing bad luck to those they crossed. - Knocking on Wood:
This practice has roots in pagan cultures where trees were believed to house spirits; knocking on wood was a way to thank them or to prevent evil spirits from overhearing and ruining good luck.
