A Timeless Fable

Inspired by this timeless fable that dates back to 1720, we present to you this new rendition, weaving the essence of an age-old story into a fresh tapestry of wisdom, wonder and stone soup friendship. We hope you enjoy this tale and are inspired to always see the best in life.

The Fable Begins

Once upon a time, in a small farming village nestled amidst rolling hills and lush green fields, a man named Clarence wandered in. Hunger gnawed at his belly, and he longed for something to eat. He approached a modest farmhouse and knocked on the weathered wooden door.

Meet Clarence

A weary-looking woman opened the door and listened as Clarence politely asked if there was anything to eat. She shook her head sadly and explained that this was a poor village, and food was scarce.

Turn Up the Heat

Undeterred, Clarence then inquired if he could borrow a large pot and place it on the fire in the center of the town square. The woman, curious yet sympathetic, fetched a heavy iron pot and helped him position it over the crackling flames.

A Stone Unturned

Clarence glanced around the square, his eyes landing on a smooth, round stone. He picked it up and placed it gently into the pot of water. The woman watched him with confusion and asked, “What on earth are you doing?”

With a warm smile, Clarence replied, “I’m making stone soup.”

Let’s Spice Things Up a Little

The woman’s curiosity got the better of her, and she stayed by the fire as Clarence continued. “But,” he said, “stone soup can be truly delicious if we had a few spices. Some salt and pepper and maybe if you can spare other aromatic spices like rosemay or thyme or such would do wonders.”

One of the villagers overheard and hurried to her home, returning with a pouch of spices that she handed to Clarence. He added a pinch of salt, a dash of pepper and the other spices, rosemary, oregano and corriander to the pot, and the aroma of the spices began to waft through the air.

A Traveller’s Story

Intrigued by the delicious scent, more villagers gathered around the pot. Clarence sat beside it, slowly stirring as he told stories of his travels and the hardships he had faced. The villagers listened intently and found themselves drawn into the tale.

Another villager asked about the soup, and Clarence replied, “Well, it would be even better if we had a few potatoes.” Without hesitation, a villager fetched a basket of potatoes, and Clarence expertly sliced them into the simmering broth.

The scent of the soup grew even more enticing, and another villager inquired, “What about carrots?” Clarence nodded thoughtfully and said, “Yes, carrots would make it even better.” A kind villager rushed to her garden, returning with a handful of carrots, which Clarence added to the pot. Another villager, offered a few onions as well which were added to the simmering broth.

The village square buzzed with activity and conversation as Clarence’s stone soup continued to develop. Then, someone suggested, “Wouldn’t it be truly wonderful with some chicken?” Clarence couldn’t agree more. A villager dashed off and returned with two plump chickens, which Clarence skillfully prepared and added to the soup.

As they all sat around the fire, waiting for the soup to be ready, Clarence recounted his journey and how he was searching for a place to start his blacksmith business and reunite with his family.

What This Town Needs

A villager listened intently and said, “We need a blacksmith here. Our farmers travel far for their ironwork. Perhaps you could be our blacksmith.”

The gathered villagers were elated they found their new blacksmith and started to celebration. They sang songs, shared laughter, and toasted to their new friend and his recipe for stone soup.

Soup’s On

Finally, the stone soup was ready. Bowls were brought out, and Clarence ladled generous portions for each villager. They savored every spoonful, their hearts filled with warmth, gratitude, and camaraderie.

As the villagers enjoyed their meal, they learned a valuable lesson that day. They realized that in everyone they met, there was something good. Opportunities surrounded them, waiting to be discovered, just like the delicious stone soup that had brought them all together.

Stone Soup Friendship

In the end, the stone was retrieved from the pot and placed on a pedestal in the town square. Each year the villagers would gather with Clarence to renew the friendship and unity and make stone soup to share.
