Mantra Chants
Balancing your chakras can be profoundly impactful. Using specific mantra chants is an effective way to achieve this harmony. Each of the seven primary chakras has an associated Bija mantra, the power of chakra one-syllable sound that resonates with the energy of that chakra.
- Root Chakra (Muladhara): “LAM”
- Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana): “VAM”
- Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): “RAM”
- Heart Chakra (Anahata): “YAM”
- Throat Chakra (Vishuddha): “HAM”

Bija Mantras
Chanting the Bija mantras for chakras can be done either verbally (out loud) or mentally (silently), depending on the individual’s preference and the context of the practice. Here’s how to do it verbally:
- Find a Comfortable Position: Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Ensure your body is relaxed, and your spine is straight to facilitate energy flow.
- Focus on the Chakra: Concentrate on the specific chakra you are working with. For example, focus on the base of your spine for the Root Chakra (Muladhara) or the throat for the Throat Chakra (Vishuddha).
- Breathe Deeply: Start with a few deep breaths to center yourself. Inhale deeply through your nose, and exhale slowly through your mouth.
- Begin Chanting: On the exhale, chant the Bija mantra associated with the chakra. For example, chant “LAM” for the Root Chakra. The chant should be prolonged and resonant, utilizing the full length of your exhale.
- Resonate the Sound: Try to feel the resonance of the sound vibration in your body, particularly in the area where the chakra is located.
- Repeat the Chant: Continue chanting for a set number of times or for a certain duration. Common practice is to chant 108 times, using a mala (bead necklace) to keep count, or to chant for a set period like 5-10 minutes.
- Close the Practice: Once completed, sit quietly for a few moments, allowing yourself to feel the effects of the chant on your body and mind.
